UK says NATO should remove hurdle for Ukraine membership of alliance

The UK Government wants to make it easier for Ukraine to join NATO by removing a key hurdle for the warring country. Secretary of State for Defence, Ben Wallace, says NATO should skip the country’s requirement for Ukraine’s Membership Action Plan (MAP), which outlines strict criteria that Zelensky needs to meet to bring his country into the 31-member state alliance.

“I think we should absolutely look at skipping the Membership Action Plan,” Wallace said at a joint press conference alongside his Canadian counterpart in London.

“But of course, we have to put some realism in this space that there are 31 members of NATO now and, you know, we have to all move together.”

Wallace says he can’t guarantee he will agree with the rest of the alliance about Ukraine’s Map. It comes ahead of NATO’s summit in Lithuania next month.
