UK flooding live: Met Office weather alerts and 100 warnings as entire town is underwater

Millions of Brits are waking up to widespread flooding this morning, with yellow weather warnings for downpours and brutal winds in place for whole swathes of the country.

From Cornwall to Hull, most of England and almost all of Wales have at least one weather warning in place, but most will have two.

Experts at the Environment Agency have issued 115 warnings and a staggering 269 flood alerts. Some towns are already underwater, with residents in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire trying in vain to mop up the flooding caused by Storm Gerrit as the latest rainfall arrives. Images taken on 1 January show the town almost completely submerged.

The Met Office flood warning for rain has been in place since 5pm on 1 January and will remain in place until 9pm tonight. Areas susceptible to flooding may be at risk of being overrun.
