UK destination left utterly devastated as wild boar causes £35k in damages

Bracelands in the Forest of Dean has seen its lush green fields turned into a sea of mud.

The area is now heavily populated with feral pigs – that have played havoc and even learned household bin days so they can ransack them.

Bracelands campsite, in Coleford, Gloucestershire, was only taken over by Spencer Pettit, 49, and Kevin Webster, 61 in April.

But the pair now facing a hefty repair bill for their fledgling business after the boar laid siege to their grounds.

The owners say they were quoted £15,000 for repairs by a contractor while new fencing to keep them out will cost around £20,000.

Spencer said: “We never dreamed the boars were so close to the campsite, it’s a very expensive lesson to learn.”

“When we saw the damage we just couldn’t believe that they could do that, it was almost awe inspiring in a way.”

“It looked like someone had gone over the ground with a mechanical drill.”

Since the rampage, the campsite has got to work on repairs, with the whole site team chipping in.

“We’ve had six nights without boar being able to get in – hopefully we’ve done enough but you never know.

“We check the site every morning. We want as many families to come out of their tents and enjoy the Forest of Dean.”

The site is owned by Forestry England who informed Spencer they would not able to help the repair costs.

A spokesperson for Forestry England said: “The fencing and security of the campsite is the responsibility of our tenants, and we are unable to take on responsibilities that are not those of Forestry England.”

“Forestry England staff have supported Bracelands Campsite with the clear up of damaged fencing and have made recommendations of which contractors to contact for the repair work.”

Forestry England’s website says: “Large areas of uprooted and disturbed soil are a common tell-tale sign of wild boar presence.”

”With powerful neck muscles and a long snout which allow the animals to plough through the ground in search of food, they can turn over a large area in a very short space of time.”
