Much of the nation has awoken to a blanket of snow this morning – from Middlesborough and London to Essex and Cornwall. But where else could be set for snow to tumble down over the weekend?
The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning in place for almost the entire east coast of the UK today – stretching from the tip of the Scotland right down to Colchester in Essex.
The warning for ice and snow is in place until 11am today – with up to 5cm expected in some areas. A second warning then activates at 5pm and lasts until 10am tomorrow, when an overnight blast of snow and ice is set to cause more chaos.
The Met Office forecast said: “Showers, wintry in places, will continue to affect northern and eastern Scotland and eastern England through Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning.
“These are likely to fall onto frozen surfaces allowing icy patches to form. From approximately the Humber northwards, showers will often fall as snow inland, with up to 2cm possible in places, and perhaps as much as 5 cm over high ground.
“Further south, any snow accumulations are more likely to be restricted to higher ground.” Weather expert Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, said: “We remain in the freezer this weekend, with Sunday posing potential snowy headaches, as a frontal trough moves across central parts of the country.
“There will some relief by the middle of next week, but for now it’s a continued wintry watching brief, with ice, snow and freezing fog all in the mix.”
Temperatures plummeted to around -10C overnight in parts of the north, with more snow and ice still to come this weekend. Brits will also feel the chill this weekend, with forecasters promising “wintry showers” across Wales, the Midlands and south west England.
Today:
A cold start with some freezing fog and icy patches in places. Further wintry showers will also continue across coastal areas, but many inland areas dry with spells of sunshine. Feeling cold, perhaps very cold where any fog lingers.
Tonight:
Many places remaining dry with clear spells leading to a widespread sharp frost. Wintry showers continuing near coastal areas with some freezing fog developing inland.
Saturday:
Another largely dry but cold day with plenty of sunny spells. Wintry showers affecting windward coasts with these perhaps moving inland across Wales, the Midlands and southwest England later.
Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Turning increasingly unsettled and less cold throughout the period, especially for southern and central areas. Northern areas likely to remain colder with further coastal wintry showers.
