Two gunmen killed after 'trying to attack courthouse' in Istanbul as six others injured

A terrifying attack on a Turkish courthouse resulted in one civilian death and the killing of two attackers, according to Turkish officials. The incident occurred at the Caglayan courthouse on Tuesday (February 6), when a man and a woman attempted to attack a security checkpoint, leaving six injured including three officers.

The attackers were fatally shot in the act during their attempt. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya shared this information on social media, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later confirmed the death of one civilian.

As the largest courthouse in Europe, also known as the Istanbul Justice Palace, the Caglayan courthouse is located in the Kagithane district on the city’s European side.

Footage from the scene, aired by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency, showed the assailants being shot down on the building’s forecourt. In the video, they appear to shoot back at police before being gunned down themselves.

Further images depicted people taking refuge beside the courthouse’s metal detector gates or fleeing for safety. Officers were filmed assisting a man who looked to have been wounded in the leg.
