Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid has revealed her “difficult” birth experience following an emergency caesarean with her first child.
The GMB veteran, 52, usually keeps relatively quiet about her personal life, but during a discussion with medical consultant Martyn Pitman, Susanna revealed how she had wanted a natural birth 21 years ago but ended up having an emergency caesarean.
The BAFTA nominated journalist is mum to three sons – Sam, 21, Finn, 19, and Jack, 18 – with her ex Dominic Cotton.
During her discussion with Mr Pitman, who claims he was fired after whistle-blowing on unsafe maternity care, Susanna shared her own experience.
OK! magazine reports he saying: “I don’t want to oversimplify, and I probably am going to, between midwives who want women to do as much as they can to have as natural and normal a birth as possible, and often they’re up against consultants, who perhaps want more surgical procedures.
“I had to have an emergency caesarean with my first child. I had the birthing pool all set up, and I wanted a natural birth – but it didn’t work out that way.
“The second time around, I was advised by a consultant to have another caesarean but I wanted to try again. I had quite a difficult second birth.”
She added: “Often, pregnant women are caught in the middle.”
The revelation comes after Susanna confirmed that she had finally taken steps to booking a mammogram appointment following Sarah Ferguson’s breast cancer diagnosis.
OK! reported that the broadcast journalist branded the Duchess of York’s diagnosis a “wake up call”.
Sarah, 63, discovered the cancer during a recent routine mammogram, which allowed “early detection”.
She has since undergone a “successful” operation following the confirmation of her cancer.
