Trump lawyers ask DC judge to set election interference court date for 2026

Former United States President Donald Trump’s lawyers have asked judges to pencil his election interference trial for April 2026.

The lawyers representing the 77-year-old say he should be given “sufficient time to advise with counsel and prepare his defense”. They described the case as “unprecedented” in American history.

The counsel claims they have been presented with 11.7 million pages of evidence to comb through. A document filed with the court says it would be 4,822ft high if stacked up – exceeding the Statue of Liberty at 305ft, and Washington Monument at 555ft.

The 45th President faces a number of charges in the District of Columbia. The Grand Jury alleges he “spread lies” about the result of the US election and voter fraud.

A document lodged to the court explains: “The large volume of discovery in this matter is not happenstance, but reflects the reality that this is a complicated, unusual case.

“There are hundreds of potentially relevant witnesses spread across the country. Many are current or former government officials, including within the Department of Justice itself. Events alleged in the Indictment, and which are otherwise pertinent, likewise occurred throughout the country.”

The court is expected to finalise the court schedule at a later date.
