Tragedy of Thai cave teen who took his life at UK school 5 years on

A teenager who was among the Thai football team trapped in an underground cave took his life at school in the UK, an inquest has heard.

Duangphet Phromthep, known as Dom, died at Kettering General Hospital in February, two days after being found unconscious at Brooke House College in Market Harborough.

Dom, 17, became a student at the school’s football academy late last year.

His death has been recorded as a suicide by Leicester Coroner’s Court, following an inquest.

Senior coroner Professor Catherine Mason said: “Mr Phromthep was not known to mental health services, and it is not known why he took the actions that he did.

“It could not have been foreseen or prevented. The police investigation has found no evidence of third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances.”

Duangphet Phromthep was captain of the Wild Boars, a football team that was trapped in the Tham Luang caves in July 2018 when a storm flooded the exit.

The team survived nine days in the cave before they were rescued and had little access to food and water.

Divers found them after a four-hour dive but it would take eight more days to get the team out through two miles of tunnels. Dom turned 13 underground.

The principal of Brooke House College, Ian Smith, said the community was “united in grief” and that Dom will be “hugely missed”.

He said: “Since this tragedy, our dedicated pastoral team has continued to provide support to students and colleagues.

“We have continued to liaise closely with the Royal Thai Embassy and other agencies to enable the family’s wishes to be carried out, and we ask for continued privacy and compassion for all affected by his loss.

“Dom will always remain a part of the Brooke House family and will be hugely missed.”
