Tottenham 'trying to hijack' Barcelona transfer as Daniel Levy wades in at last minute

Tottenham have reportedly made contact with Djurgardens as they look to steal Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall from under Barcelona’s noses. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is still pushing for squad improvements despite welcoming two major signings to north London earlier this month.

Bergvall, a 17-year-old Sweden international, has already banked a full season of senior football in his homeland. Barca are said to be keen on the youngster, and their £8.5million package was set to be accepted later this week.

But Spurs have reportedly made contact with Djurgardens before the move is signed and sealed. According to The Daily Mail, Levy and co are desperate not to miss out on the midfielder, who could soon be locked down in Catalonia.

Bergvall is admired by a host of top European sides as he continues his rapid rise in the senior game. Manchester United are believed to be among his suitors, having taken the Swede on trial when he was 14.

Appearing in 25 of Djurgardens’ 30 league games in 2023, Bergvall played a significant role in the club’s fourth-place finish. It remains to be seen whether, or where, the box-to-box midfielder will move before the end of the month.

Spurs have had a busier window than most, with Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin signed from RB Leipzig and Genoa respectively. But Levy is pushing for further acquisitions before the transfer deadline.

Bergvall is a more attainable alternative, providing Tottenham are able to beat Barcelona to the punch. The Catalan giants are in a state of flux after Xavi shockingly announced his intention to step down as manager at the end of the season.

Ange Postecoglou’s exciting brand of football has given Spurs extra pulling power in the transfer market. That could once again be put to good use ahead of their Premier League clash with Brentford on Wednesday night.
