Tottenham are said to be in talks with Genoa over a move for star centre-back Radu Dragusin and are prepared to send over their first verbal bid for the player. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is looking to tighten up his defence, with his team shipping four goals during their Premier League defeat to Brighton on Thursday.
Tottenham began the season in fine form as they stormed to the top of the table after winning eight of their first 10 matches. But their form has reversed since the start of November, with the team suffering defeat in five of their last nine top-flight encounters.
After a mini-revival just before Christmas, which saw Postecoglou’s side winning three matches on the bounce, Spurs were brought back down to earth at the AMEX Stadium as their issues at the back were highlighted time and time again.
Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 Premier League matches. And, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites want to sign a new centre-back by next week. Postecoglou has approved a deal for Dragusin, with the player already saying yes to a move to north London.
Dragusin spent last season on loan from Juventus to Genoa and played all 38 of the team’s league matches as they secured promotion to the Italian top-flight courtesy of a second-place finish in Serie B. The 21-year-old joined Genoa on a permanent basis in the summer and is yet to miss a minute of league action, with his side currently 12th in the Serie A table after winning five of their 18 matches.
On Friday, the defender even popped up with his second goal of the season as Genoa held Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium after Marko Arnautovic had put the visitors in front.
Dragusin, who has won 12 caps for Romania, was linked with a move to Manchester United in November. And the ace was also said to be attracting interest from Arsenal, Newcastle, Barcelona and AC Milan.
Postecoglou has had to deal with a string of absences in recent weeks, with some of his most trusted players being forced to sit out matches through injury. And following Spurs’ defeat to the Seagulls, the Australian told Amazon Prime: “We probably looked a little bit tired, you’ve got to be fair to the lads they’ve put in a hell of a shift over the last few weeks. We looked a bit leggy and Brighton were good.”
