The young potential F1 star, 17, who has only just passed her driving test

A young potential F1 star has only just passed her driving test, years after first learning to drive. F1 Academy Driver Chloe Grant, 17, has been racing competitively since she was 13, but until recently, wasn’t allowed on the public road.

The reason why Ms Grant, from Perth, Scotland, wasn’t allowed was that she didn’t have a driving licence.

However, after just a handful of lessons, she has ripped up her L Plates and can now drive both on and off track.

Speaking to the BBC she described how it felt to take to the road. She said: “The only thing I had been anxious about before beginning lessons was the oncoming cars, it was something I realised I hadn’t had to consider on track.”

Ms Grant also said she noticed several examples of racing habits crossing over into her on-road technique. She said: “The two things we noticed the most were that my hands were constantly crossing over.

“When you’re on the road you have to keep your hands on either side and feed the wheel through. And taking the corners a bit slower, I was taking them a bit faster.”

Ms Grant’s instructor, Alan High, said this was the first time he had taught a potential F1 driver.

He said: “My biggest concern before we started was, would I be able to keep her at a reasonable speed? And what I’ve said is while she’s doing her driving on the road, she’s not got a crash helmet on so she’s not in race mode.”

Despite her vast experience and supreme car control, Ms Grant admitted the driving test did make her a bit nervous. She said: “I wasn’t nervous about my test until the date closed in.”

However, she passed and hours later was off to France to continue the path to the pinnacle of single-seater motor racing.

This year Ms Grant will take part in the F1 Academy series, an all-female championship founded by Formula 1.

Ms Grant will partner Lena Buhler and Carrie Shreiner at French team ART Grand Prix this season. The first round will take place in Austria later this month before crisscrossing Europe and eventually finishing in the United States in October.
