A town in the north east of England has been revealed as the cheapest place to buy a house in the UK.
Houses in Burnley, Lancashire will set you back an average of just £104,626 according to the Office for National Statistic’s latest House Price Index, which tracks the average value of property in the country each month.
This is just over a third of the cost of the national average property price at £291,000.
A market town, Burnley is surrounded by beautiful countryside and boasts plenty for visitors to do.
However, its council is under pressure to crack down on anti-social behaviour, as campaigners in the town have complained of rampant vandalism and attacks in a Burnley ward.
Queensgate householder Jennifer Braddock came to Burnley Council last week to say parts of the ward had become “no-go” areas for ordinary residents.
Ms Braddock said the area was plagued by vandalism, derelict and semi-derelict cars dumped on streets by garages and others, and a changing population of short-term tenants occupying poor standard housing, reported LancsLive.
She told councillors: “Only last week an elderly gentleman was injured on Colne Road by a speeding vehicle. We still have major issues with anti-social behaviour across the whole area with youths having total disrespect for people.
“Some parts are becoming ‘no go’ areas for decent, law-abiding residents who get abused and in once case assaulted.
“Why should we need to come three times to explain our distress and the lack of attention in our ward?”
Borough housing boss Cllr John Harbour responded: “Selective licensing has never been a silver bullet that will control problems in housing or with anti-social behaviour but in my opinion it does help. When we are shown issues, we will act on them.”
Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Gordon Birtwistle said: “In 40 years on this council I have never known a residents’ group have to come here on three occasions to ask this council for help. Council leader Cllr Afrasiab Anwar and I have been round that area on two or three occasions.
“We have noted dead rats in the street, pest infestation all over the place, dereliction, and serious anti-social behaviour. The council can do something.
“We have the powers. We should be using those powers.”
However, the town also offers a huge variety to do, including windsurfing, kayaking, horse riding – and a 16-bay floodlit driving range, academy and nine-hole mini golf course at the Prairie Sports Village.
The Leeds Liverpool canal also runs through the town, creating some beautiful spots for sightseeing.
By comparison, the most expensive area in the UK is Kensington and Chelsea, with an average house price of £1,203,055.
The most expensive area of the country to buy a property outside of London, is Elmbridge in Surrey with average prices of £705,022.
