The town where a NatWest cashpoint has been voted best tourist attraction on TripAdvisor

A NatWest cashpoint in the Derbyshire town of Ilkeston has been voted the area’s best tourist attraction on TripAdvisor. The landmark was initially reviewed as a joke but has now been added to the list of the 10 best things to do in Ilkeston on the popular travel site.

That cashpoint has become so popular that it now outranks the Ilkeston War Memorial, local parks, and the Erewash Museum. Furthermore, it has been listed in the points of interest and landmarks section. Reviews of the cashpoint are full of praise and admiration. In a review posted at the start of this year, user Robert U wrote: “We visited this iconic landmark in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2024. As always, it didn’t fail to impress.

“The neon lights and street lighting made haunting shadows on the road and the light rain only added to the ambience. It is a truly magical place and one can only stand in awe at the architectural genius.

“I have met many other enthusiasts over the years and this is a great place to meet and swap stories about intrepid adventures to other landmarks. I hope to return again soon.”

Fellow visitor Jonathan D added: “An architectural masterpiece, the design and quality of finish is something to behold. We visited on a dull and dreary Saturday morning and managed to get some one-on-one time with the hole that had clearly been recently visited by royalty.”

Alan K added: “I last visited the hole back in 2016 and it was a truly magical experience. I thought I’d try and recreate the magic for my young children this week, however, it’s just not the same since it’s been commercialised.

“The queue to see the hole was 30 mins (10 minutes for expensive ‘fast track’ tickets) and it was very difficult to get a good picture as the place was overrun by tourists. We only stayed for 5 minutes as I was really worried that the number of security guards wouldn’t be able to cope with a crowd crush.”

ScotlandAbroad summarised: “Words really can’t describe the awe of this experience but TripAdvisor requires 100 characters. My life will never be the same again.”

This isn’t the first time the cashpoint has been highlighted by TripAdvisor. In 2020, they briefly suspended reviews because they didn’t describe first-hand experiences.
