The tiny village that is 'UK's answer to the French Riviera' favoured by royals and celebs

Nestled at the end of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall is the seaside village of St Mawes.

Over the years, several members of the Royal Family have enjoyed a visit to the remote fishing village where the likes of Aston Martin owner David Richards and former Attorney General Lord Shawcross have lived.

The royals would frequently stop at sleepy St Mawes while sailing on the Royal Yacht Britannia as it was far from the hustle and bustle of other areas of Cornwall.

But it seems the area is not quite as quiet as in years gone by.

Considered Britain’s answer to the French Riveria, St Mawes has boomed in popularity over recent years, and was named the UK’s Number One seaside destination by Which? In 2020.

During the pandemic, average house prices in the village increased by a staggering 48 percent, according to Halifax’s seaside review, increasing from around £339,912 in 2020 to £501,638 by the following year.

The Queen Mother, the late Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret would often stay in the stunning coastal property of Penolva, which means “lookout on the headland”, which houses up to eight people.

The beachfront abode also boasts 180 views of the sea and direct slip access to the water which was used by the royals to come ashore.

Princess Diana is even said to have stayed there following her separation from King Charles.

Penolva was built by the Queen Mother’s close friend Dick Wilkins in the Sixties.

The property, which has a grand piano and modern art adorning the walls, is now owned by St Mawes Retreats and is available to rent by the general public where guests can enjoy in-house spa treatments and meals prepared by a private chef

Her Majesty left her mark on the village with all the beds in the St Mawes Retreats’ holiday cottages having a Hypnos mattress, the late Queen’s favourite bed-making company which has a Royal Warrant.

St Mawes is also a favourite among celebrities with Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, comedian Lenny Henry and Richard and Judy all spotted relaxing along the unspoilt coastline.

Cornwall has long been one of the Firm’s beloved holiday destinations as well as celebrities and Prime Ministers such as David Cameron.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have visited almost every year and the Prince and Princess of Wales frequently take their three children there for breaks.

Prince William and Kate often visit the area and typically stay at the 16th-century Restormel Manor which the Duke inherited as part of the Duchy of Cornwall.

The likes of Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, Johnny Depp, and Gwyneth Paltrow are among A-listers who have chosen to spend their holidays in Cornwall.
