The quick 18p hack that clears your frozen windscreen in five minutes

A speedy hack that costs as little as 18p has been hailed a game-changer as it can clear your frozen windscreen in minutes. Temperatures are plummeting to -5C in the daytime this weekend, with the Met Office already issuing yellow weather warning.

Yorkshire and Scotland have already seen bouts of snow on Thursday and the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings.

The warnings are in place as people have been told to expect icy patches on roads and pavements, with up to 10cm of snow predicted in hilly areas. These icy conditions can make it difficult to start your car and get into work on time, with the whole process taking its time to sort.

But, there’s no specific scraper or gadget you need for this hack. You need a packet of sealable freezer bags which are £2.75 in Tesco. That makes each freezer bag just 18p.

The process is very simple – in three quick steps you can have a defrosted windscreen.

  • Firstly, boil your kettle.
  • When it’s steaming, wait for it to cool down for a couple of minutes before you pour it into the bag making sure you do not fill it all the way to the top.
  • Lastly, seal the bag properly and take it outside – you now have your own defroster.

Ensure that you are handling the hot water carefully so not to burn yourself. Now all you need to do is just pop the warm water bag onto your windshield and gently wipe away the ice.

To speed up the process even more, it is worth switching on your engine as well for a bit more warmth. The ice should melt straight away.

It is important to note that you must wait for the boiling water to cool down slightly as if you put boiling water directly on your window screen it can cause the glass to crack.
