The pretty UK beach with one of Europe's longest coastlines perfect for winter dog walk

With the Christmas festivities in full swing it can pay to keep in mind quiet places to get away from it all and clear your head. A UK beach that is the second longest stretch of sand in Europe and named the country’s ‘off the beaten track’ destinations could be just the place.

Berrow Beach in Somerset offers a slice of tranquillity away from the area’s more busy beaches. As well as being popular with walkers the waters also offer ideal conditions for some watersports – and on calmer days you can swim in the water.

A pretty trail towards a nearby lighthouse also gives the chance to escape from it all. The Beach Guide website sings the coastline’s praises.

It said: “The beach is used by walkers, horse riders, fishermen and beach sport enthusiasts.”

It added that the beach is very much “dog friendly” with year around pooch access allowed and “more tranquil” than other resorts along this stretch of the coast.

And it adds that there is one feature that mustn’t be missed. It said: “As the beach faces west, it gets some spectacular sunsets.”

There is an army of fans too – and it’s not just the locals who love it. Many have taken to travel website Tripadvisor to talk about their experiences visiting the coastline.

One said: “Excellent venue for a family day.  Everyone really enjoyed it. Plenty of space and good facilities. Will definitely return.”

Another fan said: “Marvellous stretch of wide sandy beach stretching as far as the eye can see. Dog friendly at all times and from my experience, responsible dog owners.”

Berrow Beach was one of the top spots to feature in a new list of the UK’s 100 best ‘off the beaten track’ destinations.

The new map was created after a survey found that 31 percent of adults haven’t explored much of what the UK has to offer yet.

Nick Giles OBE, managing director of Ordnance Survey Leisure which created the list, said: “It’s heartening to know that eight out of 10 people in Britain today would love to explore more of our wonderful country.

“As the survey results show, so much of Britain remains unexplored for so many of us.

“We are delighted to work with Jeep to map the 100 ‘Off the Beaten Track’ locations and hope that this will inspire people up and down the land to get outside and have new mini adventures away from the more obvious hot spots.”
