A pretty seaside town has been named the UK’s most bonkers after wiggly road markings were installed in January.
The bizarre markings, introduced by North Somerset Council in Clevedon, Somerset, have confused locals.
According to reports, the markings were introduced in an attempt to slow traffic but have left drivers and cyclists baffled since they were put in.
Following a period of confusion, locals have started a campaign to have them removed after photos of the markings went viral on social media.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that the unpopular markings were more than £1million over budget.
The original budget for the scheme was £201,000, but it has been revealed that this skyrocketed to £1.3million.
Speaking to the BBC, councillor Hannah Young blamed the rise in cost in part on inflation. She said: “Costs also rose due to structural damage found under the promenade, splitting the work into two stages, and other unavoidable factors like global inflation.
“Unfortunately, delaying the work at a time when the rate of inflation was accelerating between autumn last year and spring this year added an estimated £253,000 increase in scheme costs.”
The BBC reported that North Somerset Council was given £430k from the Department of Transport for several schemes for cyclists and drivers.
A new cycleway formed part of the ‘Pier to Pier’ link between Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare.
North Somerset Council said the strange markings were aimed at making the road feel narrower to slow traffic.
In response, North Somerset MP Liam Fox described the scheme as a “shambles” and encouraged the council to apologise to local residents.
To try and pressure the council to remove the markings, locals have set up a group known as Save our Seafront which is asking the Department of Transport to intervene.
A petition set up by the campaign group has already amassed around 6,000 signatures while a review of the markings is running until September 25.
The Mirror reported that new Liberal Democrat leader Mike Bell said: “It is really important if you get things wrong you hold your hands up and accept that and do things differently as a result.
“As a minimum, I would expect us to come from this review with different processes and procedures.
“If we need to do things differently on the ground in a practical sense in Clevedon, then we will do that.”
