The beautiful UK market town that's the 'most relaxing place to live' in Europe

A market town just 90 minutes away from London has been named the most relaxing place in Europe. With the hustle and bustle of city life, Londoners are often looking for an escape. And with this West Sussex town located just 90 minutes away from London, it can easily make a day trip for those looking to take a break from the city for a few hours.

Arundel, a calm market town, was named the most relaxing place to visit in the whole of Europe in 2017.

Holiday price comparison website TravelSupermarket compiled a guide with two travel writers ranking contenders for the number of relaxing activities they had on offer such as yoga or meditation.

The population density and the number of spas in each destination were also taken into account, with Arundel also faring well because of its “stunning” setting in the South Downs, with easy access to lots of relaxing walks, reports MyLondon.

Located just three miles from the south coast, the town features stunning walkways and one of the prettiest high streets in the South East.

The whole town is towered over by its spectacular castle, with some lovely walks in the town itself.

If you are feeling really energetic you could try something a little more testing, such as the six-mile walk across the South Downs to the pretty village of Amberley.

The town itself is full of independent shops, art galleries, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, and is a good base for cycling and canoeing. It is a lovely place to visit at different times of year too.

By train Arundel station, which is about a 15-minute walk or short taxi ride from the town centre, is about 90 minutes from London Victoria. By car it takes about the same amount of time from parts of South London, via the M23, A23 and A27.

If you want to make a weekend of it you aren’t far from West Wittering, which has arguably the best beach in West Sussex. But, be warned, you have to pre-book here too so that the car parks, local road and the beach itself doesn’t become overcrowded.

If it was, that just wouldn’t be relaxing at all.
