The beautiful Cotswolds village named UK's prettiest that has barely changed in 300 years

The village of Stanton in Gloucestershire must surely be considered one of the UK’s prettiest and “little has changed in over 300 years”. The beautiful spot in the Cotswolds boasts thatched roofs and quaint inns, so next time you’re dreaming up a trip in rural England, think of Stanton – there really are few better places.

According to the local tourist centre: “Stanton is probably one of the prettiest and idyllic villages in the whole of the Cotswolds. Little changed in 300 years it nestles beneath the slopes of Shenbarrow Hill.

“It has a very pleasing long main street with several delightful corners where the ancient house are built in typical Cotswolds style with steeply pitched gables, mullioned windows and glowing honey coloured limestone walls.”

The village is the idealist English country scene, with rambling streets and beautiful lush greenery. And of course pubs, the most of which is the Mount Inn.

The Mount Inn is a wonderful olde worlde watering hole, complete with beams and barnstorming traditional menu.

Diners and drinkers rave about the Mount, with one Tripadvisor reviewer saying: “The Mount Inn has been a long term lunchtime favourite conveniently located halfway around the Broadway – Tower – Snowshill – Stanton – Broadway walk. We drive out for dinner too.

“My lunch yesterday was an utterly delicious ‘proper’ chicken pie with the best-ever chips, a pot of ‘to die for’ gravy and a generous bowl of fresh, beautifully cooked vegetables, all served with a beaming smile by the ever cheerful, efficient and lovely Pip, my favourite landlady by a country mile! What is there not to like about The Mount Inn?! I love it!”

When it comes to find a place to stay, The Old Post House really does tick all the boxes. The historic buildings and gorgeous gardens leave guests more than impressed, with one saying: “We loved our visit at this beautiful post house dating from the 1600s. Jo, the owner, has kept it beautifully and it feels like stepping back into time.

“Our room upstairs was clean and had beautiful views, and we just really enjoyed being here. The gardens were fabulous.”

Another said: “Wonderful stay in the charming garden room. Enchanting village, amazing garden, lovely dogs, and helpful, friendly hosts (who offered many good suggestions of things to do) made our time in Stanton delightful.”
