The beautiful £1k-a-ticket train with a balcony that is one of the world’s most luxurious

One of the most luxurious train journeys in the world will cost you over £700 per person.

The Rovos Rail Pride of Africa is a luxury railway journey that explores the south of Africa through train safaris.

Established in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation for world-class travel experiences, combining magnificent scenery with the glamour of the golden age of travel.

Journeys on the train can last anywhere between 48 hours and 15 nights, linking some of the continent’s greatest destinations.

Many of the available journeys include trips between Angola, Tanzania and South Africa which include visits to Cape Town, Victoria Falls, copper and diamond mines, safari parks, savannahs and more.

It aims to give passengers the “opportunity to view the continent’s diverse wildlife and landscapes” with the chance to see elephants, antelope, cheetahs, canyons, vineyards and waterfalls.

The wood-panelled trains can carry up to 72 passengers in 36 suites and are also available for charter, while the Events Train caters for up to 250 guests and is suitable for daytime journeys.

Each train has accommodation carriages, dining cars, a lounge car, a small gift shop, a smoking lounge and an observation car with an open-air balcony.

Guest cars are uniquely decorated to reflect a distinct region of South Africa and have no TVs or radios, fitting the spirit of a bygone era. While on board, guests can partake in a variety of activities including fine dining, game excursions, and evening cocktails.

Those who have travelled on the Rovos Rail have called it a “journey into timeless elegance” and an “exceptional experience”. Many called it a “must-do” and “unforgettable” due to the “magnificent scenery” and the “unadulterated luxury” of the train itself.

Tickets start at £1,300 for a short journey and go all the way up to £20,000 for a longer journey.
