Terry Venables dead: Ex-England, Tottenham and Barcelona manager dies aged 80

Former England, Tottenham and Barcelona manager Terry Venables has passed away at the age of 80. Venables led England to the Euro 96 semi-finals, where they were defeated by Germany following a heartbreaking penalty shootout at Wembley.

A statement issued on behalf of Venables’ family read: “We’re totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. We’d ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time.”

Meanwhile, a statement from the League Managers Association read: “The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA president Terry Venables. Our thoughts are very much with Yvette and all of Terry’s family at this time.”

Tottenham also released a statement following Venables’ death as the north London club said: “The club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables.

“Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time. In tribute, we shall hold a minute’s applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s fixture against Aston Villa. Rest in peace, Terry.”

Venables began his coaching career in 1976 when he took over as manager of Crystal Palace following his retirement from playing. He oversaw the Eagles for four years before taking the top job at QPR. He became Barcelona manager in 1984 and led the Catalan club to the Spanish title during his maiden campaign at the helm. But he was ultimately sacked by the Nou Camp giants just over three years into his tenure.

The Londoner was appointed Tottenham boss in November 1987 and guided the club to FA Cup glory in 1991 as the Lilywhites defeated Nottingham Forest in the final to lift the trophy. He went on to take charge of the England team at the start of 1994 after the Three Lions had failed to qualify for the USA World Cup under Graham Taylor.
