Terrified woman went blind and nearly died after drinking coffee at Spanish airport

A terrified woman was left fighting for her life and temporarily blind, after drinking an insect-infested cup of coffee at Majorca airport.

The 21-year-old airline employee bought herself a cup of coffee from a vending machine at the airport.

As she started drinking the coffee, she noticed a funny taste and decided to inspect her cup more closely.

To her horror, she saw a whole load of creepy crawlies running around the interior of the cup.

Moments later she dashed to the bathroom after starting to feel sick, before realising she could not see anything.

As her condition worsened she went into an anaphylactic shock, which caused her face and throat to swell up to the point she struggled to breathe.

The stricken woman was rushed to Palma hospital after losing consciousness, where she was taken straight to ICU.

The woman told Ultima Hora that doctors informed her boyfriend that she was lucky to be still breathing.

“When I arrived at the ICU, they told my boyfriend: ‘Be thankful that a body hasn’t arrived’,” she said.

The airport worker spent 36 hours in ICU, before she was allowed to go home to her family.

She described her fear, saying: “I had a bad time, seeing myself alone, with all those tubes.”

Before she fell sick, the young woman phoned the vending machine owners Deli Corner to tell them about the cup full of insects.

She claimed they agreed to refund her the 50 cents for the coffee, although she turned down the money saying she only wanted to make sure something similar did not happen again.

Her family have filed a police complaint, saying the presence of the bugs could be a crime against public health.

The machine was clearly poorly serviced and maintained, the family added.
