The 35-year-old was in men’s doubles action later on Wednesday, but defeat to Fils was his final men’s singles match of a career that twice took him to the fourth round of a Grand Slam and previously saw him ranked inside the ATP’s top 30.
“I want to congratulate Joao for his amazing career,” said Fils. “It’s unbelievable. He played amazing for his last match! He’s one of the toughest opponents on clay, so I’m happy about the win. I was trying to stay focused on the match and nothing else.”
Sousa, who won the Estoril Open back in 2018, added: “It’s been very nice to receive the support from the fans and the love from the organization. I couldn’t ask for anything better from today.”
