Teenager left in coma while on Spanish holiday as distraught family beg to bring her home

The distraught family of an 18-year-old teenager put in a coma after developing pneumonia on a Spanish holiday, have spent £33,000 to book a medical flight to bring her safely home.

Bryony Duthie, from Scotland, is fighting for her life in a Spanish hospital. She suffers from chronic kidney problems and had to be rushed to a private hospital in Costa Del Sol on Sunday.

The teen was then put into an induced coma by medical experts, after being diagnosed with the lung condition and suffering from a seizure.

The family first thought she had fallen ill because of her kidney problems, but a CT scan revealed she had pneumonia.

Bryony’s family are hoping she can fly from Malaga to Dundee on July 27 on a medically chartered flight, which will be a costly £33,000.

Bryony’s mother, Stephanie Duthie, from Dundee said: “I’m just in a million pieces. We just need to get her home.”

She added: “The hospital has told us that they want her to be ventilated when she flies.”

Ms Duthie is also concerned that her daughter, whose father died when she was three, will have to be moved to a state hospital in Spain if she cannot be flown home because the family cannot afford to keep her in private care.

While doctors have been trying to cautiously bring her out of the coma, they fear she could suffer another seizure at any time.

She added: “Her condition, renal tubular acidosis, is so rare and unique that it’s taken them so long to get her stable.”

The family is also facing a second estimated medical bill of €27,000 (£23,400) for another nine days of private healthcare in Spain after already being charged more than £13,000 for Bryony’s first two nights in hospital and initial treatment.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with the funds needed to secure her a safe flight back home and for medical costs.

Meanwhile, Bryony’s mum has thanked the public for their generosity as the family has now raised over £50,000.

She added: “We are forever indebted to these people who have donated, we could never say thank you enough.”
