Teenage boy loses his life after e-scooter crashes with BMW in late-night collision

A teenager has died after an e-scooter he was riding on collided with a BMW late at night on Saturday. The incident took place at around 10pm along Heath Road near Maidstone in Kent. The e-scooter and the BMW were both driving in the same direction toward Coxheath when the crash happened.

Tragically, the teenage boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kent Police have not made any arrests and no one in the BMW was injured.

E-scooters are illegal if used on the road or in public spaces, according to the Kent Police.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) attended and are investigating the collision.

Forensic teams were still working at the site this morning.

The road reopened at about 8am, around ten hours after it was closed, while floral tributes have started to appear at the roadside.

Police are urgently asking for public help in their investigation of the death.

They have appealed for anyone who saw the collision or who has dashcam or CCTV footage to contact them.

The officers are asking witnesses to call the SCIU appeal line on 01622 798 538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk quoting HW/HM/070/23.

It is only the latest tragic death involving an e-scooter in recent weeks.

On 25 June, in Blackpool, a man died in a crash while riding an e-scooter.

Andrew Hughes, 39, suffered serious head and chest injuries on Middle Walk promenade and died a short time later.

Lancashire Police said it believed no other vehicles were involved in the crash near the Grand Hotel.

Meanwhile, people are calling for an e-scooter trial in Redditch to be paused after the death of a 12-year-old boy, Mustafa Nadeem, who died in a bus crash while riding an e-scooter in Birmingham.

Mustafa’s death has also prompted the introduction of facial recognition technology in a bid to stop underage users from renting e-scooters in Birmingham.

Legally, users have to be 18 and have at least a provisional driving licence.
