Surge in migrants turning to lorries to sneak into Britain, Home Office figures reveal

Illegal stowaways using vehicles or ferries to cross the Channel soared year-on-year by 60% in the three months to September 2023.

The 95 detected in that period was almost twice as high as the previous quarter’s 56 – with bad weather and 2023’s crackdown on small boats likely to be the causes.

Lorry use had fallen after millions were spent on port security and 39 Vietnamese migrants were found dead in an airtight lorry unit in 2019.

Border Force said: “As you make one route harder, they find others.”
