A surfer is feared dead after being attacked by a great white shark on a popular beach in Australia.
The 55-year-old, whose identity has yet to be released, was targeted “from the side” by a 14-foot beast near Granite Rock, south of Streaky Bay, in southern Australia.
The horrific incident unfolded at around 10.20pm on Tuesday in full of view of witnesses, who were also in the waters.
Surfer Jeff Schmucker told 7 News: “It attacked him from the side. He went under once and came up again and went under again and that’s the last the lad saw of him.”
Schmucker then hopped on a jetski to find the man and entered the path of the same great white, which he caught on film.

While Schmucker wasn’t successful in retrieving the victim’s body, he was able to find parts of the surfboard the man was riding.
And it was this discovery that led authorities to believe the man was killed. He was also able to capture the shark on film.
In a statement, South Australia Police said: “The man’s body is yet to be found, and the search will continue through to day’s end.”
Granite Rock is a popular tourist destination in Australia, but it’s also a well-known breeding ground for great whites – making sightings common.
This is the third shark attack in Australia over the last five months.
In May, Simon Baccanello was dragged under water by a great white, also in the southern Australia.
Last month, Pamela Cook was bitten by a shark while out in the water with some friends, but survived the attack.
