Sunak's by-election nightmare explodes after ANOTHER Tory MP 'immediately' stands down

Nigel Adams, the MP for Selby, has become the latest Boris Johnson alluy to quit as an MP, throwing the Conservative P{arty into further chaos.

The move which has been taken with immediate effect means that the Prime Minister is now facing a third damaging by-election while lagging behind Labour by 15 points in the polls.

Critics of the Prime Minister have suggested more MPs could go handing him what is uineffect “a mini general election” which could “destroy his moral authority to govern Britain.”

Mr Adam, who was one of Mr Johnson’s closest allies” had beeeen removed from the former Prime Minister’s resignation honours list which was published yesterday.

Like Nadine Dorries, who also quit as an MP yesterday and started the stampede to the exiut door, Mr Adams had been promised a seat in the House of Lords.

In a statement on Twitter, he said: “Yesterday, Selby Conservatives selected an excellent new parliamentary candidate. I’ve today informed the chief whip that I will be standing down as a Member of Parliament with immediate effect.

“It has been an honour to represent the area where I was raised, educated and I want to thank my constituents for their wonderful support since 2010.”

But friends and allies have told Express.co.uk that he is “disgusted” with the Sunak government and has no appetite to remain and support it for the next two years.

The resignation of Ms Dorries, Adams and Boris Johnson appear to have been coordinated to cause maximum damage to the government.

Ms Dorries announced she would quit just as Sunak was addressing Conservatives at the Northern Research Group (NRG) conference in Doncaster.

There is speculation that Reading West could see a by-election if Alok Sharma, who was also removed from the peerage list, also decides to walk.

The former cabinet minister who chaired COP26 is understood to be considering his options.

However, allies of Boris Johnson have told Express.co.uk that the former Prime Minister intends to “fight the Sunak government tooth and nail”.

It has become clear that there is fury among Tory MPs at the way key pieces of legislation from the Johnson government have been watered down or ditched altogether.

Yesterday Express.co.uk revealed that Sunak had withdrawn the promised protection to Northern Ireland military veterans, his government has already cancelled the bonfire of EU red tape as well as the privatisation of Channel 4 and border protections in the Nationality and Borders Bill.

Ms Dorries was raging previously about the unpicking of the Online Safety Bill.
