Suella Braverman insists white people must not be made to 'feel guilty for being white'

Suella Braverman insisted white people must not be made to feel guilty for being white.

The former home secretary’s comments come amid a row over claims by a group of wildlife charities that the countryside is racist.

But Mrs Braverman, who is a popular figure on the right of the Tory party, said the suggestions were “not just wrong but dangerous”.

Writing in The Telegraph, she said: “We need to stop making white people feel guilty for being white.

“Critical race theory, white privilege and unconscious bias should be constantly debunked as Left-wing militancy.

“It’s wholly disempowering for ethnic minorities to be judged by skin colour rather than by character.”

Mrs Braverman added that the claims are “one of the most ridiculous examples of Left-wing identity politics”.

She said: “It’s a symptom of a deeper problem within our society – the urge to constantly view everything through the lens of race or gender, plead victimhood and point the finger at an oppressor.

“Whether it’s the patriarchy, or colonial masters, this desperation to divide society is ripping through our institutions, creating a culture of fear and self-censorship.”

Mrs Braverman, whose parents are of Indian origin and came to Britain in the 1960s, said she has been on “countless” holidays in the countryside and has not experienced racism.

A report by the Wildlife and Countryside Link said the British countryside was a “racist colonial space”.

It added that the perception that green spaces were “dominated by white people can prevent people from ethnic minority backgrounds from using [them]”.

The report, which has sparked controversy, was submitted to MPs on the APPG for Race and Community.
