Students 'run for their lives' as mindless yobs 'launch fireworks at halls'

Students have called their campus a “warzone” after fireworks were launched at their university accommodation windows.

Footage posted on TikTok showed masked youths firing pyrotechnics at unsuspecting students near Aston University in Birmingham.

Fireworks were also launched at university accommodation windows that is home to both Aston University students and Birmingham City University students.

The various clips uploaded to TikTok appear to have been filmed around Bagot Street and Staniforth Street in the city centre.

One student told BirminghamLive that the fireworks had left them “scared to leave their flat after dark”, while another took to TikTok to say they “ran for their lives” after they were aimed at by the firework-wielding yobs. West Midlands Police has been approached for a comment.

One video is said to have been captured on Sunday 29 between 9 and 10pm – but one student said the attacks were happening ‘daily’ and into the early hours of the morning.

In the videos, which have been viewed millions of times, groups of masked thugs can be seen firing the rockets at students, buildings and each other.

A student at Birmingham City University, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s scary, it feels like I can’t leave my flat after it gets dark. I can’t sleep until like 4am when it stops.

“I missed my lecture this morning because I’d slept through my alarm due to a lack of sleep. I can’t leave my windows open at night because they’re trying to fire them through the windows.”

An Aston University spokesperson said: “This incident did not take place on the Aston University campus and we have not received reports of any of our students being involved.

“With bonfire night in just a few days’ time, we want all our students to be thinking about their personal safety and that of others. We are reminding them to be safe and sensible during the firework season and also to be aware of the legal penalties for anti-social and criminal behaviour involving fireworks.”
