Storm tracker live: Nine hours of thunder and lightning to batter Britain today

Brits are facing the prospect of torrential rain, thunder and lightning today from 11am until 8pm, as the bank holiday threatens to be a damp squib.

It’s the east coast in particular that is under threat, with a yellow weather warning in place from Skegness in Lincolnshire all the way up to Dunbar in Scotland.

According to the Met Office: “Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some localised flooding and disruption on Saturday afternoon.”

Cities inland are also under threat, with Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield all expecting to be engulfed in the treacherous weather.

Meteorologists at the Met Office have also warned that there is “some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.

The experts added: “There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray and standing water, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Delays to train services are possible”

They also noted that there is a “a small chance of some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes, as well as short term loss of power.”
