Christmas markets in Sheffield and Liverpool were closed and the roof was torn off a section of a block of flats in Lower Bradway, Sheffield.

There were gusts of 81mph at Brizlee Wood in Northumberland, and at Baltasound on Shetland, while 113mph was recorded twice in a 10-hour period of winds topping 100mph at the peak of Cairn Gorm in the Highlands.
