Storm Jocelyn: Moment plane takes off sideways after being battered by gale force winds

Shocking video footage has shown the moment a plane was forced to take off in gale-force winds as Storm Jocelyn hit.

The Ryanair plane was filmed taking off from Leeds Bradford Airport this morning as winds blew it to one side as it made its ascent with the pilot eventually gaining full control and straightening it out.

Many flights have been diverted away from the northern airport amid stormy conditions with winds as high as 97mph battering England and Scotland.

Followers were shocked by the footage saying conditions were “bad enough in the summer” at the airport.

One commented: “It can be windy in the height of summer there. Not sure I’d fancy it today.”

Today most planes have been diverted away from the airport to Liverpool and Birmingham.

Elsewhere in the country, one man was killed in Scotland following a crash, which prompted a 12-hour road closure. Scotland has also seen nearly 2,500 households left without power following the onslaught.

A trampoline also landed on a train track near Livingston causing disruption as National Rail Scotland officials temporarily deactivated overhead wires to ensure its safe removal.

Amber and yellow weather warnings for wind have been issued by the Met Office, encompassing a significant portion of the country.

And the forecaster expects extreme conditions to continue this evening.

Its forecast for tonight read: “Blustery showers will die out in the north this evening, with clear spells overnight allowing a patchy frost to develop in the north and east. Elsewhere, cloud will increase from the south and west, bringing some rain.”

River flooding is also possible along parts of the upper River Severn in Shropshire until Friday.

The Environment Agency has issued 17 flood warnings – where flooding is expected – and 101 flood alerts – where flooding is possible. Elsewhere, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has put out 14 flood alerts and 33 warnings and Natural Resources Wales has issued 10 alerts.
