Storm Henk chaos as M1 flooding causes 'severe' delays

Storm Henk has caused severe flooding on a major UK motorway this evening, with travel chaos across the country due to severe conditions.

The storm – which was named by the Met Office early this morning – has caused heavy winds and rain in England and Wales, with some gusts reaching up to 80mph.

Between 30mm and 40mm has fallen in some areas, according to the agency, and highways bosses have warned of travel disruption on the M1 in Meadowhall, near Sheffield, after heavy flooding on a major slip road.

National Highways says that there is “severe” disruption being caused by both lanes being closed on the southbound entry slip road to the M1 at junction 34, the turn-off close to the popular shopping centre.

The Met Office currently has a yellow warning for rain in Sheffield, along with other parts of the country, which is in place until 9pm tonight.
