Storm Gerrit tragedy: Three men die after brutal winds force 4×4 into national park river


A huge emergency response at a National Park has ended in tragedy after it was confirmed three men died after getting into difficulty in a river. Yorkshire Police were called to the River Esk, near Glaiside in the North York Moors this morning.

It’s understood a passer-by had spotted a 4×4 at just after 11.30am today in the river after brutal Storm Gerrit winds ripped into Britain. It has since been confirmed that three men were found inside. They were tragically pronounced dead.

The car has since been recovered from the river. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman added a fourth man needed medical treatment after trying to attempt to pull the other passengers out of the sunken vehicle. Fire, ambulance and partner agencies scrambled to the scene, along with an air ambulance.

In a statement, it said: “The vehicle was recovered from the river by the fire service just after 3pm. Sadly, the three men inside have died. Another man who attempted to help those in the 4×4 was pulled to safety from the river at around 12.10pm.

“He has been receiving medical treatment. Next of kin are currently being informed about the tragic incident and specialist support is being provided by the police.

More information will be released in due course. In the meantime, witnesses to the incident are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, option 4, quoting reference NYP-28122023-0146.”
