Social media user shares 'lonely' story of being 'forced to sing by myself' on birthday

A social media user was cheered up online after sharing a heartwrenching experience of celebrating their 18th birthday alone. The Reddit user took to the social media platform to express the loneliness and sadness of being completely forgotten on what is meant to be a special day of celebration.

The user wrote: “So I turned 18 almost a year ago and nobody wished me happy birthday or even acknowledged it was my birthday.

“Well after work I went to the store and bought myself a cake and some candles.

“I proceeded to drive home and sing myself happy birthday to myself in the bed of my truck.”

The social media user felt “lonely at that point”, the post read.

It further stated: “I just figured people would get a laugh out of this story as I do.”

The thread prompted a large number of users to share their stories about celebrating their birthdays alone.

While some empathized with the user and shared their experiences of lone celebrations, others reached out to the user to lift up the mood.

One of the users wrote: “This is so sad.. I had a similar experience just recently.

“It was my golden birthday and ever since I was a child I dreamed of doing something big.

“But everybody canceled on me and I spent the day on tik tok waiting for it to be over. I’m sorry you felt forgotten. Happy birthday, whenever it is”

Another user offered to celebrate next birthday together over a zoom call.

The user wrote: “You should get another cake and we will get together over zoom and will sing you happy birthday next time.”

A third user replied: “I’ve learned self-reliance is the most important skill one can learn.

“And the second most important is how to be comfortable and content while alone.

“You did good. Fulfill your own needs and never expect others to do it for you. If someone does, it’s just a bonus. That’s my take.”

The 18-year-old social media user was overwhelmed by receiving over 100 comments to the post.
