Six Nations LIVE: England heroes mock Sir Clive Woodward as 'rubbish' Wales rule blasted

Former Wales ace Lee Byrne has called for the country’s 25-cap rule to be scrapped after Ross Moriarty revealed that he thought it was ‘rubbish’.

Under the current rule, if a player has fewer than 25 international caps they must play for a Welsh region in order to continue playing for Wales.

However, players with over 25 caps can join whichever club they like and still represent their country.

Byrne told the Sport In Wales podcast: “I played in France. That ruling wasn’t in, it came in later. I went to France and arguably became a better player, although it was later on in my career.

“Mike Phillips, Jamie Roberts and all these players went to France and played with world-class players week in, week out, in the hardest league in the world, the Top 14. The English league is doing well as well.

“Definitely, for me, it’s a no-brainer. South Africa changed their rule, let their players play wherever they want and they won two World Cups from it. So it’s not a bad rule to change.”
