Sisters spend 24 hours travelling 5,500 miles to visit Britain's cheapest seaside town

Sisters travelled over 5,500 miles from the other side of the world just to holiday at an English seaside resort dubbed the cheapest in the UK.

Carmen and Faith Rogers spent 24 hours travelling from the tropical island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic to pay a visit to Blackpool.

The Rogers sisters are not alone in their love of the Lancashire resort that attracted 21 million visitors in 2021.

It has also been found to be the cheapest seaside destination in the UK with a room for the night costing on average £48, according to CheapRooms.co.uk.

Blackpool’s iconic attractions include the 518-foot-tall tower, the iconic ballroom used in BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, the Sea Life Centre and the Pleasure Beach, to name just a few.

But the town is also a magnet for stag and hen parties and famous for some raucous nightlife.

Carmen and Faither said they had made the trek to the north west of England to visit Madame Tussaud’s.

Carmen said: “We’re here mainly for Madame Tussaud’s, in Saint Helena, we hear about Blackpool all the time.”

Visiting for four days, Carmen explained the route from their remote island to get to the UK and what their plans are for the trip.

She added: “It’s a well-known tourist attraction and we’re really looking forward to it. We’ve only just got here and all we’ve done is eat, but we’re going to do the attractions.”

The islands of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are a British Overseas Territory and also have their fair share of attractions, with warm seas making perfect conditions for diving with whale sharks.

Saint Helena island was also the final resting place of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled there by the British in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo. He died on the Saint Helena in 1821.

Another world-famous resident is Jonathan the tortoise who it is believed is the world’s oldest living land animal, at a grand old age of around 190.

The RAF maintain a base on Ascension island in the territory which helps supply the region as well as protect the strategically important area.
