Should 15 year olds be allowed to drive? Tens of thousands demand lower legal driving age

Tens of thousands of people across the UK are calling for the legal driving age to be reduced to 15.

Almost 60,000 people across the country have signed a petition to Parliament, as of 12.30pm on Saturday (September 30), urging the Government to change the current laws.

The petition claims the current law is “unfair” and that “15 and 16 year olds can be trusted to drive a car”. Information is not provided on how old those signing the petition are.

At present people can apply for a provisional driving licence from the age of 15 years and nine months and can drive a car from 17.

However, people need to be at least 16-years-old in order to buy petrol.

The petition, started by Matteo Joseph Shirley, states:  “I would like the Government to change the legal driving age to 15 because I believe that 15 and 16 year olds can be trusted to drive a car and should be able to get a driving licence.

“I belief [sic] the current situation is unfair, and inconsistent with the Equality Act 2010.”

Areas where the petition has received high numbers of signatures in include Bradford West (450), Blackburn (416) and the Hodge Hill area of Birmingham (517).

The Government responds to all petitions that receive more than 10,000 signatures on Parliament’s petition website.

Any petition that receives more than 100,000 signatures is considered for debate in the Houses of Parliament.

No country in Europe allows people under the age of 16 a full supervised driving licence for cars.
