Shirley Ballas defends royals after Denise Welch slams ‘side piece’ Camilla on Loose Women

Shirley Ballas, 62, expressed her excitement for King Charles’ upcoming coronation and described herself as a “royalist” in response to comments made on Loose Women earlier today.

During the ITV programme, panellist Denise Welch, 64, admitted she couldn’t muster “any enthusiasm” for the event – even branding the Queen Consort, Camilla, a “side piece”.

Taking to Twitter, Strictly Come Dancing star Shirley told her 93,000 followers: “Watching @loosewomen one of my favourite shows.

“My mother and I are royalists and we are very excited about the coronation,” she continued. “Hope it’s a beautiful day for all who choose to tune in.

“I have taken several days off to enjoy it all and not miss a single thing,” she added, tagging Denise as the episode of Loose Women aired.

During the ITV show, where Denise was joined by fellow hosts Brenda Edwards, Linda Robson and Jane Moore, she spoke about her own view on the celebrations.

“I feel like for a lot of people, the monarchy isn’t the same since the Queen died,” she said.

“I’m trying to get some enthusiasm for the coronation and I haven’t got any.”

While King Charles has been married to Camilla for 17 years, many members of the British public are still mourning the loss of his beloved first wife, Princess Diana.

Denise continued: “I’m not particularly a Camilla fan… The fact is I just think she was there from the beginning of his marriage to Diana and I think it’s disrespectful to Prince Harry and… And I can’t get over that she was the side piece.”

The former Waterloo Road actress has been vocally supportive of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle in the past, including after his explosive memoir Spare was released.

Loose Women airs on weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
