Serial baby killer Lucy Letby mounts fresh bid for freedom behind bars

Lucy Letby has launched a new bid for freedom in prison as she appeals her convictions for murdering seven babies in a neo natal unit whilst working as a nurse. Letby, 34, was sentenced to 14 whole life orders last year after being convicted of the murders and the attempted murder of six more.

The former nurse had issued a bid following her trial that was rejected by a judge without a hearing in January.

Letby has since chosen to relaunch her appeal, a judical spokeswoman confirmed to The Mail. A hearing will be held in London in front of three senior judges, who will decide whether or not to accept the appeal.

Letby, from Hereford, was sentenced in August last year. The horrific crimes took place at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

Applications submitted against a crown decision are usually considered by a judge examining legal documents without an official hearing.

People then have two weeks to renew their bid for permission at a full court hearing.

The jury at Letby’s trial was unable to reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder regarding five infants.

It follows news that the serial killer has been handed the keys to her own jail cell as a reward for “good behaviour”, and it’s thought that she may use it to hide from other inmates if she feels threatened.

The parents of Lebty’s victims have expressed their devastation at the news, with one saying: “We thought they were throwing away the key, and now we find out that she has her own key.”

Meanwhile, one prison insider compared her living situation to a “hotel”, and said: “It means if she wants to socialise she can, and if she wants privacy she can have that too. It’s really no different to living in a hotel – but you’re surrounded by criminals.”

After being moved from the Low Newton jail in Country Durham, she now resides in the privately-owned HMP Bronzefield which reportedly has prisoners living a luxurious lifestyle.

At Bronzefield, situated in Surrey, she is believed to have access to a television, a phone, and an ensuite bathroom – all whilst receiving around-the-clock protection.
