Sergeant demoted for indecent exposure and racist outburst at leaving drinks

A para has been demoted after indecently exposing himself to a military police officer called to his racist and aggressive outburst.

Sgt Alan Griffith’s leaving drinks deteriorated into chaos outside a kebab van, a military court heard.

He was seen “staggering” then hurling racist abuse and becoming aggressive when asked to pay for his takeaway up front.

The van owner called military police and Sgt Griffith “exposed fully” his genitals to a woman officer while urinating in the street. After admitting to misconduct through alcohol, disgraceful conduct of an indecent kind and using disrespectful behaviour, his rank was reduced from Sergeant to Corporal.

He challenged the decision but his appeal has now been rejected by Bulford Military Court, Wilts.

It was told the incident took place in the early hours of November 18, 2022, near RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Lt Col Chris Adair said that after the military police arrived Sgt Griffith told them to f**k off and refused to identify himself so Thames Valley Police arrived and arrested him.

He told the officers in the police vehicle: “I could kill you both” and fell asleep, wetting himself with his trousers around his ankles. He woke up after being handed back to the service police and insisted: “I wasn’t even drinking tonight.”

The appeal hearing was told he now acknowledges he has a drink problem and is acting on it.

Judge Advocate General Alan Large told him: “The gravity of this offending, the length of it by a highly experienced non commissioned officer means the sentence was justified in all the circumstances and we refuse the appeal.”
