Queen Camilla took a six-hour drive from Sandringham to Salisbury to attend a charity concert last night because she did not “want to let the King down”, a royal source has claimed. King Charles’s wife showcased her true devotion to her husband and the crown as she attended the event at Salisbury Cathedral despite the treacherous weather conditions.
During the event, Camilla described the King as doing “extremely well under the circumstances” following his cancer diagnosis and added that he was “very touched” by all the messages of support he has been receiving from the public. The royal couple travelled to Sandringham on Tuesday after the monarch had undergone his first bout of cancer treatment.
The Queen was reportedly warned of the weather conditions on Wednesday night and was told that they would prevent her from flying with a helicopter from Norfolk to Wilshire on Thursday as planned.
But despite that, the royal decided to travel more than 200 miles by road and carry out her engagements.
A source told the Telegraph: “The flight was cancelled due to the weather so she elected to go by road, which is one hell of a journey – at least six hours in these conditions. She did not want to let down the King, having assured him that she would continue with her schedule of official engagements.”
According to reports, the Queen is also a friend of the concert organiser and didn’t want to let them down or the charities due to benefit from the event.
And she did not as she was all smiles when she arrived at the concert and spoke to medical staff from Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Ben Abbott, 40, a critical care paramedic, said: “I do hope His Majesty is doing well Ma’am, we’re all really sad to hear the news.”
Camilla replied: “Well he’s doing extremely well under the circumstances, he’s very touched by all the letters and the messages the public have been sending from everywhere – that’s very cheering.”
The Queen – who has a home in Lacock, Wiltshire – chatted with the air ambulance medics about their work.
Mr Abbott said: “I told her we always wave when we fly over Lacock and she said she always waves back.”
She also met representatives from a number of other charities including the Colonel’s Fund, and Grenadier Guards before enjoying a private musical concert with guests compered by Paul Martin, host of BBC’s Flog It!.
Camilla will be returning to Sandringham to support her husband throughout the weekend. Charles is expected to return to London in the middle of next week to continue his outpatient hospital treatment.
