Seagulls besiege Scottish towns forcing locals to stay indoors as gull attacks on the rise

Residents in a string of Scottish towns and cities reported being besieged by the birds and unable to leave their homes.

In July last year, a grandad in Aberdeen was left bloodied and battered after being attacked.

Kenny Esson, 78, was lifting a chick out of his garden when a gull struck. He said: “The mum or the dad came swooping down and drew blood with their beak.”

The city is thought to have one of the UK’s largest urban gull populations. Anne Lindsay, a member of Loreburn Community Council, has urged MSPs to take action.

She said: “We can’t ever let our guard down when it comes to gulls. We have to monitor what is happening… the severity.”

Seagulls are a common plight in many communities, they have adapted specifically to terrain and are known as generalist feeders. UK seagulls have adapted to civilisations and scrounge for food in towns and city centres.

Last month the Mirror reported a particularly aggressive seagull in north London that was divebombing people of all ages and their pets. It was so aggressive that it left people fearful to leave their homes where the seagull keeps watch on the top of a house in Crouch End.

Writing on Facebook, one wrote: “It has come to my attention in recent weeks there is a fear rising, and it’s the effect of a terrorising seagull.

“I have witnessed it multiple times nose dive at passers-by, with the full intention of striking had they not had ninja-like reflexes.

“I heard it went for a dog last week and tonight I saw it strike a runner and later a near miss with a small child.

“Even the other seagulls were p*ssed, and subsequently went in to attack it, but to no avail, he’s still at large. Enough is enough, what can we do?

“Admittedly, this sounds comical, but it is not.”

Reacting to the shocking story, a number of other locals shared their own scary encounters with the angry gull, with one responding: “I live across the road from this and they have been attacking people on the daily. Someone lost their shoe running away from it.”
