Sarah Ferguson undergoes mastectomy in eight-hour operation to fight cancer

The Duchess of York reportedly underwent an eight-hour operation after being diagnosed with breast cancer last week. According to The Mail on Sunday, Sarah Ferguson, 63, had the eight-hour single mastectomy at King Edward VII hospital in London. Sarah Ferguson, known as Fergie, had been diagnosed with the disease and spent four days in intensive care at the private hospital where she was monitored round the clock.

Last night, a friend of the duchess, who is now back at home, said: “The surgery was very long – getting on for eight hours – and it was more involved than people think.

“Today, the message she wants to get out is that she is very grateful to those who saved her and she feels very lucky to be alive.

“Specifically, the duchess wants to thank the two incredible surgeons Christina Choy and Stuart James who carried out the operation and all the medical team who worked tirelessly to help her.”

The grandmother of three has opened up on how she went for a routine mammogram and was told she had cancer.

A statement from her representatives confirmed she was now recovering at home in their Grade II listed property that is part of the Crown Estate.

A spokesman for the Duchess said: “Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening.

“She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully.

“The Duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her that the prognosis is good. She is now recuperating with her family.
