Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew's unconventional life together at Royal Lodge unveiled

Representatives for the Duchess confirmed she is recovering at home following her operation, where she stays with Andrew even though they divorced 27 years ago.

The couple tied the knot in 1986 and were very happy, however the Prince’s naval career soon forced to spend months of the year apart.

She told US TV host Ernie Manouse in 2010: “My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer.

“But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn’t get him. For our marriage, I saw him 40 days a year.”

The pair separated in 1992 after speculation that Fergie had an affair with Steve Wyatt, a friend who had been there for her when she was “exceptionally low” according to her biographer.

Not long after they separated as further scandal broke when pictures emerged of Fergie on holiday with her “financial advisor” and friend John Bryan sucking her toes.

She was estranged from the Royal Family for many years as a result, with Queen Elizabeth issuing the following statement at the time: “Last week, lawyers acting for the Duchess of York initiated discussions about a formal separation for the Duke and Duchess.

“These discussions are not yet completed and nothing will be said until they are.”

The pair later divorced in 1996.

Relations between Fergie and the royals are now much improved, and she has continued to stand by Andrew ever since their divorce as they co-parent and now co-grandparent together.

Since 2008 the Duchess has been staying at Royal Lodge while in the UK but does not call it her home, as she explained in the Sunday Times: “I travel a lot and I’ve always been able to make wherever I am home. If I am staying in a hotel I have the same family photographs and scented candles around me.

“When I’m in the UK I’m lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous.”

Since her diagnosis Fergie said on her podcast Tea Talks that it has “changed her life” and she vowed to get “super fit” as she recovers with her family.
