Sadiq Khan faces imminent ULEZ ruling and admits court may quash hated expansion

The court’s ruling on whether Sadiq Khan can expand his hated ULEZ policy to outer London is “imminent” according to reports, with as little as 24 hours left before hard-pressed drivers find out whether they will be charged £12.50 per day just to drive their cars.

A judge is now expected to rule on the ULEZ legal challenge within the next day, after five Conservative councils forced Sadiq Khan to court in an effort to declare the expansion unlawful.

Speaking to ITV, the Mayor of London conceded he may have to pause the expansion if the court rules against him.

Mr Khan said: “There are a number of things the court could say and some of those could lead to a delay – the court could quash the order I made to expand ULEZ”.

“So there are a number of things it could do from quash the decision to expand ULEZ on August 29th to require, hypothetically speaking to reconsult.

“I am someone who believes in the court of law.”

The ULEZ expansion was thrust into the political limelight following the Tories’ surprise victory in the Uxbridge by-election last week.

The Labour party appears completely split on the issue, with Keir Starmer urging Sadiq Khan to “reflect” on the scheme, and telling activists something has gone “very wrong” if Labour policies are appearing on Tory leaflets.

Angela Rayner on the other hand admits that ULEZ schemes are “coming to every town and city” in the UK.

The Tories are hoping to use the policy row as a wedge issue at the next election.
