Sadiq Khan faced chants of “get Khan out” as an event with Londoners descended into chaos last night.
The London Mayor and London Assembly Members were grilled by members of the public about issues affecting the capital at People’s Question Time at City Hall on Thursday evening.
But the two-hour event deteriorated towards the end as some audience members began chanting “get Khan out”.
London Assembly Member Krupesh Hirani was speaking when the group started shouting for Mr Khan to go.
Chair Tony Devenish warned he would end the session early if they continued to chant.
He said: “Come on. This is your final warning or we’ll just clear the room. We’ve only got four minutes left so we can stop early. Quiet.”
The chants started minutes after a furious audience member asked Mr Khan when he was going to “do us a favour and resign”.
Shortly afterwards, there was further disruption when audience members heckled the London Mayor as he answered a question about thefts from shops.
The Labour politician said some shoplifting was due to the cost of living crisis and gave an example of mothers not being able to afford nappies for their children.
At that point, one audience member then shouted: “You should be in a nappy.”
Elsewhere during the session, Mr Khan defended his controversial expansion of London’s ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) following an angry question from a woman in the audience.
She said: “I have a friend who is going to see his disabled sister every weekend out of London in his non-compliant car. It’s now costing him £1,300 per year to go and see and help her.
“It’s costing other people lots and lots of money as well. You say London is open, but your policies are closing it more and more every day.
“I believe ULEZ is actually replenishing Transport for London’s budget. I don’t believe the lies, I don’t believe that it’s all about pollution.”
Mr Khan replied: “So in relation to the support for those who’ve got non-compliant cars, we’ve made progress since the last People’s Question Time, which is now every single family in London is eligible for support through the scrappage scheme.
“Every single business is now eligible for support. Every single charity is now eligible for support. Those who are disabled are eligible for a grace period.
“Those are the big changes that we’ve made. We’ve put in more money for the scrappage scheme.”
