The Rwanda scheme reportedly “could cost the UK nearly £5bn in the first five years” for 30,000 migrants, according to leaked Home Office documents.
It is anticipated that as few as 500 migrants will be deported in the first year but the move is designed to “incentivise” the country to take “higher volumes”.
The documents show that more than 30,000 migrants will be deported during the scheme at a cost of up to £150,000 for each individual leaving the country at a total of £4.5 billion overall.
It was further claimed that the UK was in negotiation to put in place a similar scheme with Armenia, the Ivory Coast, Costa Rica and Botswana.
Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay are also said to have been approached for such a deal, according to leaked documents, which relates to work in the Home Office and Foreign Office.
The Foreign Office have suggested Costa Rica, Botswana, Armenia and Ivory Coast but work has been delay.
