Rwanda fightback begins! No10 gets green light for new battle to overturn High Court blow

The Government has finally been given the go-ahead to bring a Supreme Court challenge over the Rwanda deportation policy.

The news comes two weeks after a divided High Court ruling said Rwanda deportation flights would be unlawful due to faults in the African country’s own asylum policy.

Court orders published this afternoon reveal the Court of Appeal granted permission for the Government to challenge their decision at the Supreme Court.

Three judges overturned a High Court ruling that previously said Rwanda could be considered a “safe third country”.

On the day of the High Court’s judging, Rishi Sunak said he “fundamentally” disagreed with them.

“Rwanda is a safe country. The High Court agreed. The UNHCR have their own refugee scheme for Libyan refugees in Rwanda. We will now seek permission to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court.”

The timing of the Supreme Court appeal are yet to be revealed.
